Hi, I'm Chris Hagan

I'm a digital journalist

Who I am

I'm a journalist and editor interested in how to get people information to better navigate their lives. This can only happen in collaboration with the communities we as journalists want to serve.

I also specialize in data analysis and web development. I believe the more we learn about our communities and the more we understand who we are, the better we can all work together.

Things I've made!

Here's a few of my favorite projects. Check out more in my portfolio.

Trawling For Clarity

Served as main editor on story and graphics explaining how invasive shrimp harm the clarity of Lake Tahoe.

California Wildfire History Map

A map showing more than 100 years of California wildfire perimeters.

A Series Of Possibilities

Interactive package examining why the team favored to win the World Series often doesn’t.

Building Up and Tearing Down

Audio and web story examining the trend of real estate teardowns in some Chicago neighborhoods, based on analysis of nearly 10 years of building permit data.

Why Buses Arrive in Bunches

Worked with WBEZ’s Curious City project to answer a listener question about why buses often arrive at the same time. Collaborated with an illustrator to create an interactive slideshow explaining “bus bunching”.

Buy-in to Chicago’s neighborhood grammar schools

A map showing how the percentage of students attending their neighborhood school changed from 2001 to 2014. Part of a larger package that won first prize for data journalism from the Education Writers Association.
